Old Manor lost in the middle of a white coat

Also available in: Russian

I was always fascinated, even as a child, by antiques and ancient times. I always felt I should have been born in the 17th or 18th century. At that time, you could find a real big stone castle with authentic furniture…

Location and how to reach

The old Manor is situated in Lentvaris, Trakai District Municipality, Lithuania.

On the another side of the river

Go out from the train station, then turn left, and continue walking straight on for half an hour. In the near from the castle you can find two little wood bridges with laces and ducks.

History

Today we will talk about 19th century, and a little bit about the beginning of 20th. The Manor was built in 1850 by the project of Gustav Schacht for the Tyszkiewicz family. This was a wealthy and influential Polish-Lithuanian magnate family of Ruthenian origin.

In the end of 19th century the castle was rebuilt with fashionable at that time English neo-Gothic style. Inside you could find a rich collection of works of art. Outside the castle there was a huge park with artificial lentvar lake, stone bridges and artificial grottoes, and 60 different types of trees and shrubs.

Old Manor

And then suddenly… the First World War came, and ruined everything. The collection of works of art was taken to the depths of Russia, and then its traces were lost… Inside the castle Russian militaries were located, who ruined everything inside.

The Tyszkiewicz family were trying to restore everything, but then again war came. After the Second World War inside the Manor the furniture factory AB kiimai was built.

Then in 2007 the director of the company Ranga Group Laimutis Pinkevicius bought this castle. He wanted to make from it a tourist attraction, but later, in 2012, he declared himself bankrupt, and the castle was arrested.

Description

The castle is completely empty inside so I won’t put many interior pictures, but the architecture is very impressive. The manor is built in the neo-gothic style and has 4 floors including the ground one. You will not be able to see much of such red fired-brickwork around Lithuania.

Beautiful red-stone buiding

One of the most prominent features is the tower. Staring down on the little town of Lentvaris, it’s beautiful and grotesque in its own way.

During winter the view from up is amazing, all white, cold, ice. Snow is covering the town leaving an aura of mystery traveling through the air.

Local kids like to gather inside this building. Sometimes they drink, eat and write on the walls, sometimes they make a fire on the attic, sometimes they make jokes and throw stones from the holes on the walls. They go inside, but the rooms are barren, there’s nothing left to steal or destroy.

Furthermore the guest must pay attention at the floor, especially the last one, pitted a bit everywhere.

Inside nothing is left
